Founded by Berne Degraffenreid of Switzerland in 1710, Historic Downtown New Bern boasts a rich history, character and southern charm. Around Downtown you will notice the bear logo and the full size painted bear statues which are odes to Switzerland. Historic Downtown offers a variety of historical houses dated back to the late 1700’s which have been revitalized and are featured during the Kitchen Tour and House Tour throughout the changing seasons. What most people enjoy about Downtown New Bern is that the Tryon Palace, stores, art galleries and local restaurants are all within a small radius thus allowing residents to enjoy an evening stroll to their favorite location.
